When we look at this year so far, it can be easy to think of all the things we don’t have. We’ve had to cancel events, change plans, grieve losses. We are waiting in a lot of ways. This seems truer this year than perhaps it usually does.
In this waiting, we may also be thinking differently about stewardship. Some of us might have more time on our hands than we usually do. Some of us, less time. We’re all reconsidering our resources—our patterns have changed and therefore the way we utilize what we have has also changed.
So this month, in the midst of all the confusion we may have, the setting of new patterns, the waiting, we would read about God’s provision and our stewardship. The entire Bible, it could be argued, points to God’s provision. He provided us with everything we could possibly need in the Garden of Eden. Then, He provided us with His Son, through whom forgiveness became possible. He also promises provision of eternal life to all who believe. He is our great Provider.
In that, we read in Scripture, like we say every month, stories of people both thriving in the call to stewardship and failing. When we say we steward something—our time, our physical resources, our talents—we mean that we use those gifts from God to honor God. We are generous with them, knowing He is the One who has given them to us. We want to use our time, our resources, and our talents to share His love with others, to worship our Provider, and to point others to Him.
As we read this month, let’s look for ways God may be asking us to use what He’s so graciously provided for us to glorify Him!
