In 2021, we’ll be sharing a monthly chronological Bible reading plan that will help us grow and understand how the Bible fits together. We wanted to go ahead and provide the April reading plan so you can print it out and have it ready for the first day of the month!
This month, we’ll continue our chronological journey through Scripture as we read some familiar stories of victories, brokenness, defeat, and God’s grace. We will read stories of familiar biblical heroes including Deborah, Samson, Gideon, and David. We read the ray of grace that shines through the story of Ruth, who becomes an ancestor of Israelite kings. As you read, notice the recurrence of themes we have seen so far in the biblical story.
Consult a map at the back of your Bible to help you keep your bearings as you read about the distribution of the promised land and the battles fought during this time. You might find it helpful to use Bible mapping as a tool to understand how the land was God’s place for His people. If you’re interested in reading more about Bible mapping, check out our recent blog on how to use Bible mapping for spiritual growth.
Remember that the word judge used in the Old Testament referred to an inspired leader, essentially one who served as a military leader. The spiritual and governmental conditions of the Israelites continues to deteriorate throughout the period, primarily because they refused to acknowledge God as their true King. Yet God showed compassion to His people.
This month, ask God to help you stay true to Him when circumstances grow dark with sin and rejection of God’s standards. Praise God for developing a great plan to shape the destiny of His people. Take time to thank the Lord for the grace and compassion He shows you each day.
