Today, learn more about the new Every Day in the Bible study by Mary Wiley.
In Every Day in the Bible, we’ll read the Bible in one year together, seeking to experience God on every page, delighting in the connections between passages and concepts, asking and answering tough questions, and finding again and again that it is all about Jesus.
As we read the Bible in one year, we’ll explore Old Testament books alongside New Testament books so that we might see the beauty of Scripture’s continuity and its unity in revealing the God we love and serve on every page. It is this knowledge and love of God that will help us apply what we learn to our everyday lives—because every day you are answering theological questions in your own life and in the lives of others. How do we live? How do we think? How do we find hope and security and patience in a world of chaos and instant gratification?
How? We see the light of the face of Christ in the pages of Scripture, and in Him we find all that we need. May we seek His face together. In the hard questions. In the doubts. In the frustrations. In our insecurities. In our wandering. And on our good days. We’re here for it all. How might your life be different if you commit to every day in God’s Word?
How might the Lord move the affections of your heart as you learn more with your mind? And how might you live in light of that truth? What if God uses His Word this year to mold you more and more into the image of Christ, the One who revealed that all the Old Testament—the Law, the Prophets, and the Writings—are about Him?
As we read the Bible in one year, we’ll spend each day experiencing God in His Word, reading together, learning together, and praying together. We’ll expand our biblical literacy—learning to rightly understand God’s Word and its connections. We’ll read in a different order than you may have read Scripture before, and that is by design.
The study begins in the Gospel of John, as He begins similarly to Genesis 1:1. “In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” We’ll see the glory of the face of Christ in the gospel of John, and then we’ll read Genesis, a narrative John was teaching us how to read with His gospel. We’ll read Exodus and Leviticus with Hebrews, Numbers and Deuteronomy with Romans, and so on, always reading the Old Testament in conversation with the New Testament and always through the entirety of a book before moving on since they are complete works of literature, intended to be read as a single unit. We’ll follow concepts and images that are found throughout the Bible, tracing connections and biblical allusions so that we fully understand what we are reading, all with the goal of seeking God’s glory. Of seeing His face.
We’ll also dive into Scripture and how it transforms the way we think, the way we make decisions, and the way we live. This is the work of developing our theological literacy: of knowing and loving God rightly, which always results in Christ-like living.
There’s an old song written by Helen Lemuel. Helen faced both great triumph and even greater suffering in her life. She was a singer and composer, traveling and receiving many accolades. In her forties, she developed a life-altering illness that stole her sight. In these darkest days, Helen penned a song called “The Heavenly Vision” or what you may recognize as “Turn Your Eyes upon Jesus.” Helen, who could no longer see the beauty of the world, did not lack for the vision of the glory of Christ. She wrote the lyrics, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.”
So, what is one year to you? 365 days. Just 52 Mondays, twelve firsts of the month, and four seasons. One year of change. One year of trials and triumph, struggle and strengthening. One year of training our appetites to long for the nourishment of heaven—the Bread of Life. One year of learning how to walk in the truth of the whole of God’s Word, seeing that it’s all about Jesus, and falling more in love with Him along every step of the way.
