Church small groups are important within a congregation. They play a valuable role in fostering community, discipleship, and spiritual growth. The rhythms of Bible study and accountability are likely in place if your group has been meeting regularly. But it may be time to help those close relationships grow deeper with some fun activities you can do together as you laugh, learn, and explore something new.
Summer can be a wonderful time to shake up the routine of your small group by doing something “out of the box” to form or strengthen the bonds of friendship and church family. Here are some fun ideas to help you and your small group spend time together and get away from your normal routine or gathering place.
The Great Outdoors
Depending upon where you live, there may be all kinds of outdoor activities to explore with your small group. Consider these options or create one of your own that fits your small group and location.
Tourist attractions or visiting a state or national park nearby are always great ways to spend the day with your small group. You can have fun together while exploring many of the things that draw people to your city. Ask the group to point out things they have never seen before. Praise God for the many ways He provides beauty in creation and adds fun into life on earth.
Adventure activities such as kayaking, tubing, canoeing, hiking, surfing, paddleboarding, ziplining, rock climbing, and more may be within minutes or hours of your community. Consider trying one of these more adventurous activities with the encouragement and support of your small group. Cheer on the brave and encourage the timid. Remember to allow everyone to participate as much as possible without forcing the fearful.
Host field day for your small group in someone’s yard or local park. Think about the favorite childhood games you enjoyed. These timeless games have been enjoyed by generations of kids and adults: three-legged race, tug of war, wheelbarrow or sack race, water balloon or egg toss. Choose options that allow all to play and participate in some way. Take pictures throughout and tell the stories of childhood field days at school compared to playing the games now.
Scavenger hunts are a terrific way to explore the outdoors while strengthening communication among members of the small group. Consider doing a location-based trivia scavenger hunt where the small group answers trivia questions based on a location. The answers are hidden in statues, art, street signs, plaques, or other notable landmarks. Always remember to take pics of what the group finds!
Any kind of seasonal activity that would take your group outdoors and provide opportunities for individual and group photos will build community and memories.
The Great Indoors
Field trips to visit a local museum, art gallery, or historical site together are fantastic options for indoor activities for your small group. Field trips provide a break from the routine and allow members to explore something new while bonding and simply spending time together.
Escape rooms are a fun way for your small group to solve puzzles and work together to escape. It is a thrilling and collaborative activity that promotes communication and problem solving.
Cooking and eating together allows your small group to expand their palettes and conversations. You may want to take a cooking or baking class together to learn new skills or recipes. Another option might be to have a friendly competition around the making of a certain food. Just like a chili cook off, choose something that all would enjoy in the summer such as homemade ice cream, the best burger, or a chilled dish.
Creative Arts could include lots of ways for small group members to express their creativity while being together. Your group might choose to attend a concert or music festival. You may consider spending time painting or attending an artwork session. Consider finding a local place where your group can paint pottery, do leather work, or learn another craft. As a group, attend a play or performance at a local theater. Whatever you do as a small group, remember to celebrate the talents and creativity of all participating. Give thanks for God, the Creator.
Whether indoors or outdoors, there are so many ways to spend time with your small group and challenge them to get “out of the box” to try something new. Remember, the key is to choose activities that allow everyone to participate and contribute. Adventure, or out of the box activities, come in many forms. Even everyday activities can be turned into mini adventures. Whether you are exploring your hometown, venturing into nature, or trying something new, embrace the spirit of adventure and think “out of the box” with your small group!
