Each month, you’ll hear from one of us on what we’re reading and a little bit about the book. This month we’re sharing book notes on Amanda Mejias’, This Is Girls Ministry. Enjoy!
No matter what your job title says, you are a girls minister, even if you have never been given the official role. And if you are the girls minister, I know that you do way more than just girls ministry.
Amanda Mejias in “This Is Girls Ministry.”
Sitting at a girls’ conference in tenth grade, I remember feeling an intense burden for the other teen girls in my church. Being a teen girl has always been hard. I began serving in girls ministry as a Bible study leader my sophomore year of college, spent my summers working at an all-girls Christian camp, and continued to serve and find ways to pour into the next generation over the past decade. Let me tell you: girls today have so many voices speaking into their lives and impacting their decisions and thoughts. It can be overwhelming (and intimidating) to connect, engage, and disciple middle school and high school girls today.
Enter This Is Girls Ministry by Amanda Mejias. Honestly, I was hesitant to order this book because I am not, nor have I ever been a “girls minister.” I was worried most of this book would not be relevant to me, but the sprinkled donut on the cover caught my attention.
The subtitle Your Relational Strategy to Reach Teen Girls encouraged me to dive in despite my fears that I might not be able to relate to the contents of a book on girls ministry. This book is filled with encouragement for those who are serving in girls ministry in an official capacity and for those who know and interact with teen girls in any capacity. I love that this book is broken into three parts: The Purpose, The People, and The Plan.
Through relatable stories, biblical truths, and interactive pages, the book will challenge and encourage you to intentionally find ways to love and lead teen girls. I found myself sprinting through the pages and appreciating the reminder that intentionality and relationships are among the most impactful things in the lives of teen girls.
I loved that this book wasn’t just written for women in ministry but for moms and dads, volunteers, and even men in ministry! (I definitely found myself sharing tidbits of the “Men in Ministry” chapter with my husband who also serves in student ministry). To sum it up, we’re ALL called to be girls ministers.
This Is Girls Ministry prompted me to step up and take initiative with the teen girls in my life and family. It reminded me of the importance of being willing to disciple in the context of doing life with the women who are younger than me—both inside and outside the church doors.
