We thought you should know this Sunday is National Ice Cream Day.
Is there anything sweeter than cooling off during the hottest months of summer with a classic cone? Whether you dream in chocolate or vanilla, sprinkles or hot fudge, ice cream is truly something we can all share.
So what can you do to make the weekend extra sweet?
Make homemade ice cream:
For a recipe card, simply click here or on the image below for a PDF to print. Then, cut out the card and add to your recipe box or hand out to friends.
Play Pin the Cherry on the Sundae:
A sweeter take on the classic Pin the Tail on the Donkey game! Simply make your own oversized sundae with leftover craft supplies like construction paper and paint, and cut out paper cherries for each player. Blindfold, spin, and laugh as players try to pin their cherries to the top of the sundae. Serve ice cream as a consolation prize.
Host an Ice Cream Party:
Since ice cream, as all parents will inform you, was meant to be eaten outside, hosting a social for your friends, family, neighbors, or small group is a great way to get together while maintaining physical distance. Ask families to bring sheets or blankets for an old-fashioned picnic and hand out individually wrapped ice cream sandwiches. Or if you feel comfortable getting closer, set up an ice cream bar with all the fixings—sprinkles, hot fudge, caramel, maraschino cherries, nuts, whipped cream, and more.
We’ve created cute toppings cards for your next ice cream party! Click here or click on the images below for a PDF to print. Cut out your cards, fold on the dotted line, and make your table a little more festive.
Don’t feel comfortable gathering in person? Host a virtual ice cream party! Here’s a fun image you can use in your Facebook group or event page:

Hand Out Gifts:
National Ice Cream Day and others like it are great ways to encourage others and show them you care. Think about your family, friends, neighbors, and greater community—who could use an ice cream cone and a note of encouragement right now?
If you can’t deliver treats without them melting, pick up some freeze-dried ice cream sandwiches, also known as astronaut ice cream, in the camping section of your local store. It’s just as sweet and will definitely bring a smile to a loved one’s face.
