Did you know tomorrow is National Donut Day?
It’s a big day in its own right—where are our fellow sweet tooths?—but after the last few months we’ve had, we need these light, fun, fringe holidays more than ever. (Although National Donut Day has its roots in 1938!)
So what can you do to make tomorrow extra sweet? (And if you don’t feel like waiting until tomorrow, celebrate tonight! Every day is donut day in our book.)
We have a few ideas:
Donut Ring Toss:
Take the fun outside with a game that’s sure to be a hit with the little ones!
You’ll need:
- Corrugated cardboard
- Scissors
- Large plate
- Small bowl
- Craft supplies like paints, glitter, etc.
- Dowel rods
Lay the large plate on top of the cardboard, trace around it to make the perfect donut shape, and cut it out. Center the small bowl on the cardboard donut to trace the center hole and cut it out. Decorate your cardboard donut with whatever craft supplies you have on hand. Repeat for additional donuts. Insert the dowel rods into the grass in your backyard and challenge your kids to a competitive game of ring toss.
Donut Tree
Warning: This is not a game to play in your Sunday best. Don an old T-shirt and prepare to laugh yourself silly and leave a sticky mess.
You’ll need:
- Donuts (preferably not the gourmet kind)
- String
Tie pieces of string to the donuts and hang them from low tree branches, each slightly above mouth level for each game player. On the count of three, instruct all players to eat the entire donut—no hands allowed—without letting it fall off the string. Bonus tip: Have some extra donuts on hand when a few inevitably hit the ground.
Baked Banana Nutella Donuts
You’ll need:
- 1 c. flour
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- ¼ tsp. salt
- ½ tsp. cinnamon
- ¼ c. plus 2 tbsp. sugar
- 1 egg
- ½ c. mashed ripe banana
- ¼ c. plus 2 tbsp. buttermilk
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- Nutella
Preheat the oven to 400°F. Lightly grease your donut pan. Whisk together the dry ingredients in a large bowl. In another bowl, whisk the sugar, egg, banana, buttermilk, and vanilla extract. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and stir until combined. Fill each donut well until three-quarters full. Bake for 11 minutes, until golden, or when an inserted toothpick comes out dry. Let cool completely before adding the Nutella on top. Enjoy!
Donut Gifts
National Donut Day is a great way to encourage others and show them you care. Think about your family, friends, neighbors, and greater community—who could use a donut and a note of encouragement right now?
We’ve created printables to help you show them how loved they are! Click here or click on the image below for a PDF of donut encouragement cards to print. Then, simply cut out your cards and hand them out with scrumptious donuts.
