In 2019, we’ll provide a monthly reading plan centered around our blog theme for 2019: This Is Discipleship. We wanted to go ahead and provide the September reading plan for those of you that like to print it out and have it ready for the first day of the month!
One of the most disappointing things to a vegetable gardener is a beautiful tomato plant that produces no fruit. If the plant is lush and green with lots of blooms, yet there is no fruit being produced, that’s a sign that something is wrong. It could be too much water or not enough. The plant may not be getting light. Or it could be that the temperature is too cold, or too hot, or other problems. But here’s the deal: if a tomato plant is not producing tomatoes, it’s basically useless—because that’s what tomato plants are meant to do. They are not ornamental; they are functional.
The Scripture is clear: Christians are to produce fruit. There should be evidence of the Holy Spirit working in us and through us. If there is no fruit, we should see that as an indicator that something is wrong in our spiritual walk.
This month as you read these passages, take an honest evaluation—what fruit am I producing? Is the work of Christ evident in my character? Is the leadership of Christ evident in my decisions? Is the power of Christ working through me to help bring about spiritual transformation in others? If not, why?
We’re not saved, called of God, and filled with His Spirit to be ornamental. We’re called to be functional—to produce fruit.
