Earlier this week we talked about discipleship. The call to disciple is found continually throughout Scripture, but sadly, so few of us do it. Many of us are at a loss for who to disciple or how to begin, but perhaps we’re overcomplicating it. Kandi Gallaty gave us 4 simple tips to get started with discipleship on Tuesday, and today we have a few suggestions of people you can seek out a discipling relationship with:
1. Your children. If you have kids, you are already discipling them. Think about how you’re raising your children in terms of Kandi’s definition of discipleship: “Discipleship is intentionally equipping believers with the Word of God through accountable relationships, through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit in order to replicate faithful followers of Christ.” As a Christian parent, you are equipping your sons and daughters with the Word of God, holding them accountable for their actions, and leaning on the power of the Holy Spirit to raise them up to be Christ followers. That is discipleship!
2. Your nieces and nephews. If you live nearby your siblings’ children, this is a great opportunity to disciple a younger generation. As an aunt, you have a lifelong presence in a child’s life, but it is likely easier for them to be open and honest with you than with their parents. And how great for your siblings to have someone they love and trust helping them disciple their children!
3. A younger girl at church. If you don’t know anyone young in your congregation, reach out to the youth pastor and tell him that you’d love to begin a discipling relationship with someone at church. He may have someone in mind already or he may have a volunteer position for you to fill in which you can disciple a group of girls in the youth group.
4. A younger girl in the office. Is there a girl at work who you know is a Christian? Ask her if she wants to get lunch once a week to go through a reading plan together. You never know who else may see what you’re up to and want to join in.
Today we’re giving away 5 sets of Foundations + Foundations for Kids by Robby and Kandi Gallaty.
