Poor winter. If winter were a person, we wouldn’t treat it this way. But since it’s a season, many of us wish it away.
Winter can be marvelous.
It’s the time of year when you get to snuggle closer to loved ones. Parents know even independent toddlers and preteens are willing to scoot a little closer for extra warmth during the coldest months. Winter gives you freedom to stay in for days on end—introverts, rejoice! And it holds some of the most festive holidays on the calendar—Christmas, New Year’s, and Valentine’s Day. (If you’re not a Valentine’s Day fan, at least admit chocolate tastes better coated in pink candy shells.)
Yes, we’re shivering, but that’s nothing a few layers of flannel and wool won’t fix. So instead of enduring winter, let’s savor it. Let’s make every last day of winter so wonderful, spring will get a little jealous.
Here are a few winter activities to get you started:
- Make the most of soup and stew season.
Once the temperature rises, it’ll be too hot to sip soup. Get your fill of hearty soups and stews now while you can. Opt for seasonal produce that won’t be as nutritious or ubiquitous in the spring—root vegetables! citrus! pomegranates! Not only will your house smell amazing, but you’ll spend an overcast day cozy in the kitchen. - Schedule a spa night.
Cold, dry air and harsh winds take a toll on your skin. Invite over a few friends, or set aside alone time to care for your skin with moisturizing lotions, masks, and oils. Light a few candles, brew a cup of tea, and you’ll have the spa experience without ever leaving home. - Break out the books.
Whether you want to read more books or get ahead in your Bible reading, now’s the time to do it! Is there anything cozier than curling up in bed with a book and a cup of coffee? Or if you’re feeling social, get your friends together for a Bible study, and spend an evening once a week talking Scripture. - Try something new.
We pack our warmer months full of activities and plans, so take advantage of the chilly downtime and learn a new skill. Master poaching egg, pick up a pair of knitting needles, or try your hand at a new art. - Opt for movie night.
Sometimes you just don’t feel like changing out of pajamas. Pour butter over popcorn, and settle in with family or friends to watch that movie you’ve all been dying to see. After all, winter is the perfect time to hibernate. - Throw a cozy party.
Add friends, a crackling fire, blankets, and s’mores, and you’ve got a party. Or better yet, assemble a hot chocolate bar complete with different varieties of chocolate, candies, and whipped cream, of course. (Tip: Throw in a few heart-shaped decorations, and you’ve got yourself a Valentine’s Day extravaganza.) - Plan your summer getaway.
If you’re still not crazy about winter, start planning your spring or summer vacation during the coldest months of the year. Not only will you be prepared when your trip rolls around, but you’ll also get to daydream about warmer and sunnier locales to come.
How will you make the best of the rest of winter?
