It is a life-giving thing to let dead things go. Fall reminds us of this as trees shed their colorful leaves. They die in brilliant colors, making way for new buds next spring. As we thought about our year and what we would pray in each month, we thought of the word release for October.
The verse we’re memorizing and dwelling on this month is from 2 Corinthians.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away, and look, new things have come.
2 Corinthians 5:17
There is beauty when the trees release their dead leaves, and there is beauty when we release what we no longer need. For the believer, the old things—bitterness, selfishness, anger, lies, fear—have passed away. The new things—forgiveness, generosity, hope, truth, trust—have come, like the buds each spring.
While we are made new instantly in God’s eyes because of Jesus’ righteousness, we must each day work out our salvation (Phil. 2:12) by putting off the old and putting on the new. Releasing the old things to make way for the new. Our prayer this month is that we will continually release what we no longer need and learn to continually put on the righteousness of Christ.
