Each month, you’ll hear from one of us what we’re reading and a little bit about the book. Enjoy!
I recently read Steadfast Love by Lauren Chandler and immediately began recommending it to everyone I know.
The book is all about the steadfast love of God in the midst of all of life’s circumstances—the beautiful, the mundane, the hard. Lauren uses Psalm 107 as an outline for stories of God’s faithfulness in her life and the lessons she’s learned. Her writing style is easy and conversational, but she does not shy away from the big questions about who God is and what that means for His people. Steadfast Love is soaked with Scripture and weaves stories of God’s goodness and sovereignty, of learning to hope in the right things, and what it looks like to worship our Creator every step of the way. More than anything, this book shows readers how God loves His children with an unending and unconditional love.
I have underlined and starred and heart-ed so many of the sentences in this book (I also wrote “boom.” next to a few, which is my marginalia version of wishing the author had a mic to drop.), but here are a few of my favorites to give you a little taste.
“What we believe about God and who He is and what we believe about ourselves in light of that is revealed in our most personal places.”
“Men and women become the hands and feet of God. They sit across from us, look us in the eye, place a hand on our shoulder. They listen as we pour out our hearts. They pray with us. They pray for us when our words struggle to surface. They preach the gospel to us when we forget what it sounds like. They point us to Scripture and remind us of the Truth.”
“We can believe He is all-knowing and all-powerful but until we acknowledge that He is good and trustworthy and relinquish our control, we will keep lugging our chains behind us.”
“That storm that seems so inconvenient, so intrusive, so destructive might very well be the Lord establishing something longer lasting, more fulfilling than what your heart could conceive.”
“God delights in our asking. Believing in His sovereignty doesn’t mean resigning to ‘He’ll do whatever He wants anyway so why bother?’ Believing in His sovereignty means we know whatever may come our way, it’s what is best for us because He knows the future. The future is a place He already is.”
“Praise lets us tell on God—to recount all the ways He has been faithful. It’s an invitation to join the chorus that has been singing the same song from the beginning.”
I highly recommend Steadfast Love to everyone. Anyone going through a storm in their life or dealing with anxiety would find it immensely helpful to point them to the God who loves them and is in control, even when it doesn’t seem like it.
And y’all, this cover. So great.
