Let’s be honest… It can be daunting to raise a boy in a culture that has waged war against strong men. And who doesn’t want all the help you can get? Vicki Courtney, the founder of Virtuous Reality Ministries, offers encouragement and practical tools for moms to navigate raising boys and girls in the midst of the chaos.
Here’s an excerpt from Courtney’s 5 Conversations You Must Have with Your Son Member Book:
If ever I needed proof that “adventure is written into the heart of a man,” I’m fairly certain the homemade slip ‘n’ slide my youngest son and his friends constructed could be
submitted as evidence. They took up donations to purchase a roll of 40-by-100-foot plastic sheeting and 10 gallon-sized jugs of vegetable oil from the grocery store to turn their dream into a reality. The boys rolled the plastic sheeting down a steep hill on the nearby campus of a middle school and voila, instant water park. That is, until the police showed up and kindly told them to slip ‘n’ slide on outta there. I’m not sure if my son walked away from this adventure learning any lessons, but I certainly learned a few:
(1) Try as I might to temper my sons’testosterone, boys will still manage to be boys.
(2) No matter how many times you attempt to wash clothes soaked in vegetable oil, it
will never come out. Forget about your boy ever wearing those clothes again.
