As a reminder that the good news is for all people, this week’s invitation is to learn about and pray for those who are, like the angels, proclaiming the gospel to all who haven’t heard. Make a map ornaments to remember to pray for the gospel to be taken around the world.
Supplies
- Pages of a double-sided map
- Glue
- Yarn or twine
- Optional bead for the top or bottom
- Scissors
- Paper clips or clothes pins
Instructions
- Cut out 18-26 circles from the map. You can use a cup, jar, or jar lid as a template. You’ll need to cut all the circles the same size.
- Fold all the circles in half.
- Glue the circles together.
- Open the folded circles and run a line of glue horizontally halfway down the middle of the inside of your circles. Refold in half so that all your circles are glued together in the center. You should now have 18-24 half circles. You can use the paperclips or clothes pins to hold them together as you work.
- With the circles still folded, run two lines of glue along the top and bottom of the folded circle, so that there is space in the middle where the glue line is on the inside. Glue the half circles together in a stack.
- Once they’re all in a stack together, use the clothes pin or paperclip to hold them together until they dry. See the diagram of instructions here.
- Open your ornament. Take off the clothes pin or paperclip and slowly open up your stack. You’ll want to open up all the unglued parts of the ornament so that they fully open. Fan the circles around into a sphere as you work to open it up.
- Add string. Cut an amount of string that is two and half times the length of your ornament. Fold the string in half. If you would like to add a bead to the bottom or top of your ornament, add it to the folded string. Run a line of glue down the “spine” of the ornament (where all the circles meet in the middle) and attach the string, leaving the loop out at the top of the ornament.
- Complete the circle. Once the string is glued down and dry, gently pull the ornament around until it forms a sphere. Glue the two “ends” of the ornament together. You may need to clip them until the glue dries so they stay together.
Once the glue dries, you have your map ornaments! Hang it on your tree or display it year-round to remind you that Jesus’s coming was good news of great joy to all people!
