The idea of God’s providence is synonymous with His provision for us. Notice providence includes the word provide. The word also includes ideas of foresight and forethought. In our limited capacity, we make provision for our lives based on what we are able to see coming. We may set aside money for a child’s college tuition, prepare for an upcoming work presentation, or put ourselves in the best position to succeed physically and spiritually. We are wise to look ahead and provide for ourselves and for others accordingly. But our foresight and resources are limited. Not only are we unable to see the future perfectly, we don’t always know what God’s perfect will is for our lives or for others. This is where God’s providence comes in.
God knows what we need, can see the future perfectly, and knows where all of life is headed; He is the One who guides and guards our lives. Isn’t it a comforting thought that no matter what we face in our lives, God is lovingly in control? Not only does He hold us fast, but He also guides our steps in keeping with His loving will. He is both directing our individual lives and the world at large. He is moving all things toward the full accomplishment of His purposes. We can rest in His bountiful providence.
One of the hallmarks of the book of Esther is this theme of God’s providence. While God’s name is never mentioned, the work of His hand is visible at every turn. Mordecai’s position in the royal court and Esther’s place in the royal palace are evidence of God’s divine placement and appointment. Mordecai overhearing the plot to assassinate the king and working with Esther to foil it were providential circumstances that played a role in the future deliverance of the Jews. God also fashioned seemingly mundane details such as Haman’s gallows and the king’s sleepless night to accomplish His purpose—the saving of the Jews.
Ultimately, God’s providence throughout the Old Testament moves toward the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. For us today, God’s providence is moving us toward holy living, love for one another, fruitfulness in Christ, and our eternal home in heaven. We can rest in the truth that God is not only the Creator of the universe but the Preserver of it as well.
