A note from Kelly King: Each month, we will feature a leader who ministers to women, either through the local church, a non-profit organization, or in the marketplace. In today’s Q&A, we’re featuring Jessie Seneca. Jessie has been teaching at You Lead events for the past few years and conducts her own leadership conferences called She Leads. You can hear Jessie this year at the You Lead event in Green Bay, Wisconsin on August 9. For more information, click here. She will also host a She Leads conference before The Word Alive event in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, separate from Lifeway. For more information, click here.
Who has been most influential in your ministry leadership and how did they influence you?
Many years ago as a young leader, there was a woman who came alongside me through a rough (poor) leadership experience I went through. She showed me what good leadership looked like through servant leadership. She pointed me to Jesus rather than herself. She led selflessly rather than selfishly. She saw potential in me and invested her life into me. Since then, I have worked with many wonderful individuals who continue to build into my life. I think the biggest takeaway I have from the people who have built into my life is their humility and how they work unto the Lord rather than man.
How do you practically spend time with the Lord each day? What is your normal practice?
I make my morning routine a priority. I wake up early (by 6:00 a.m. most days), grab my cup of tea, and read His Word for at least an hour. Then I work on a Bible study for about an hour. To be honest, some days it’s difficult as I want to plunge into the work of the Lord rather than just being with the Lord. It is a conscious effort to stay focused and meet with Him first.
What is your best piece of leadership advice to another women’s ministry leader?
Make sure to prioritize your time with God before meeting the needs of everyone else.
What is your current leadership struggle?
Time management. Allowing the daily to-do list to not be checked off and moving things to the next day. Deciding what is important and what is necessary.
What “new” thing are you trying this year that is requiring faith?
Changing event structure and locations.
